Gombe State’s sports community is celebrating an outstanding achievement as one of its own, Munyal Kwairanga, emerged as a rising star in athletics, putting the state on the national sports map. Munyal, the sole representative from Gombe State in the 8th National Youth Games, has become a symbol of perseverance and potential.
In recognition of her accomplishments, Malam Farouk Yarma, former Commissioner of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, has announced a One Hundred Thousand Naira (N100,000) grant to support Munyal’s continued journey in sports.
“Her achievements reflect not only her dedication and talent but also the potential that exists within our communities in Gombe State,” Yarma stated. “In recognition of her outstanding performance, I am pleased to announce that my company, Prudential Sport Limited, will present her with a token of appreciation amounting to One Hundred Thousand Naira (N100,000).”
The grant, which will be disbursed through the office of the Chairman of the Gombe State Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Mark Nuhu Mabudi, is seen as a gesture of support for Munyal’s promising career.
Yarma took the opportunity to commend Munyal’s parents for their unwavering support. “I commend Munyal’s parents for their support in her journey at such a young age. However, a critical question remains, how can we sustain her momentum and ensure her continued success?”
While celebrating Munyal’s achievements, Yarma also raised concerns about the state of sports development in Gombe. “It is a concern that Munyal Simon Kwairanga is currently the sole representative from Gombe State in the National Youth Games. This situation is particularly disheartening given the wealth of talent in our state that deserves similar recognition and support,” he said.
He highlighted the imbalance in participation, noting that other states are sending delegations of 150 to 300 athletes. “This anomaly needs to be critically addressed. As we celebrate Munyal’s achievements, we must also ask ourselves: is our sports sector in Gombe functioning effectively?”
Yarma emphasized the need for a sustainable sports culture in the state, encouraging collaboration and investment in youth talent. “Together, let us work towards building a sustainable sports culture in Gombe State that empowers our youth and showcases their incredible potential,” he concluded.
