According to a report by Daily Trust Newspaper, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development in Gombe State has debunked claims that teenage gymnastics star, Munyal Kwairanga, was sponsored by her parents to participate in the 8th National Youth Games in Asaba. In an interview with Daily Trust, the Commissioner clarified that the state government fully covered her participation.
Speaking through the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Sports, Modidi Shelpidi, the Commissioner reaffirmed that Munyal Kwairanga is an official representative of Gombe State, with the government handling her registration and providing all necessary support.
“We are optimistic about her performance,” the Commissioner said. “She has already won three medals for Gombe, and we anticipate even more success before the end of the games.”
He further stressed that the state government’s involvement was comprehensive, saying, “The government registered Munyal, and her team, including the Director of Sports, her coach, and the chairman of the Gymnastics Association, are all in Asaba with her, fully sponsored by the state.”
The Commissioner also dismissed rumors suggesting that Munyal’s parents financed her participation, calling the information “false.” He added that other athletes from Gombe are also competing in various events, and not just Munyal.
In closing, he explained that Gombe’s athletes did not attend the zonal eliminations in Taraba because they had already secured their qualification for the competition.
