The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL), under the leadership of Chairperson Nkechi Obi, stands at a crossroads.
Barely a year ago, during the Annual General Assembly (AGA) themed “Women Football Rising,” the NWFL Board pledged to advance women’s football in Nigeria. Ms. Obi emphasized increasing female participation and strengthening the league’s capacity. However, recent actions suggest a troubling disconnect between those promises and the board’s decisions, raising concerns about the league’s democratic integrity and commitment to progress.
The controversy centers on the NWFL’s proposed expansion from 16 to 18 teams for the 2024/2025 season. At the AGA, 22 out of 35 delegates voted in favor of the expansion, with 16 specifically backing its immediate implementation.
This democratic process was a landmark moment that should have celebrated the league’s inclusivity and growth.
Yet, the NWFL Board, led by Ms. Obi, has disregarded the congress’s clear directive. This move undermines the league’s governance and casts doubt on its dedication to fostering the development of women’s football.
The stakes are particularly high for teams like Osun Babes and Pelican Stars, whose promotion symbolizes fairness and opportunity
Their performance warrants inclusion within the expanded framework, yet the board’s inaction jeopardizes their future. This stands in stark contrast to the smooth expansion from 14 to 16 teams in 2023, a precedent that demonstrated respect for congress decisions. By failing to implement this latest resolution, the board risks eroding trust and diminishing its credibility.
Expanding the league promises significant benefits: increased opportunities for players, coaches, and referees; heightened visibility; and greater investment in women’s football. By delaying this progress, the NWFL board hinders its own mission and alienates stakeholders. Chairperson Nkechi Obi and her board must honor their commitments and respect the congress’s vote.
Upholding democratic principles is essential for charting a brighter future for Nigerian women’s football and reaffirming the league’s dedication to fairness, progress, and inclusion.
